Recognised as a model national-level programme by the White House and the Department of Education of the United States. National Winner of Fast Company Magazine’s Social Capitalist Award. Eric Schwarz has been a member of the Ashoka network of social entrepreneurs since 2011.

Mobilises education leaders, businesses and families to carry out their model of quality out-of-school support. Its aim is to reduce the achievement gap of students without resources, by connecting them with adults in the community who help them in their training and give them guidance.

Impact indicators
  • 9 out of 10 Citizen Schools students pass state graduation exams in maths and English.
  • While only 33% of 8th grade students (US average) say they are interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) careers, 80% of students participating in STEM learning through Citizen Schools show interest in these professions.
  • The overall estimate for the 2013/14 school year was 32 partner schools, 5,300 students attended, with 4,700 volunteers and 244 AmeriCorps members involved.
